Madeira’s first and only tiki bar, celebrating the historical link between Madeira and Hawaii.

Located in Estreito da Calheta, Pukiki brings you the largest selection of rum in Madeira, tiki and tropical cocktails.

What is tiki

Tiki is the name given to the carved idols in Polynesian culture symbolising ancestral figures – the first human beings. Uniquely different to each Polynesian culture, these carvings represent various gods and traditions, often resembling the human form.

The birth of the tiki bar

The first Polynesian-themed bar and restaurant was created in the 1933 by Donn Beach - an American adventurer, businessman, and former rumrunner. He opened ‘Don the Beachcomber’ in Hollywood, serving rum based drinks surrounded by Polynesian and nautical treasure. He is considered the "founding father" of tiki culture.

By the 50s and 60s these bars were a huge phenomenon in the USA popping up all over the country, offering post war Americans escapism to the South Seas in their own towns.

Tiki went on to become a style of its own, influencing architecture, design, music, and art, eventually becoming its own subculture.

By the 1970s these Polynesian-themed bars and restaurants had lost popularity and the vast majority were closed and quickly forgotten. In the 90s they began to be rediscovered and became generally known as tiki bars.

Tiki is having a revival and the forgotten rum potions of the past generations are now being celebrated and reinvented.

What is Pukiki

Pukiki means Portuguese in the Hawaiian language.

In 1878 the first Pukiki - Portuguese people from the Madeira and Azores islands - set sail to Hawai’i to work in the growing sugarcane industry. Madeira already had a long history of sugar cane production and a very similar sub-tropical climate to Hawai’i, which made Madeirans ideal workers for this job.

The Portuguese settlers influenced Hawaiian culture in many ways, most notably by introducing the ukulele, which was invented by madeiran Manuel Nunes in 1879.

In the bar we have on display the only original ukulele made by him to have found its way back home to Madeira. At Pukiki, we aim to give the authentic tiki bar experience, inspired by the likes of Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic whilst celebrating this real historical and cultural connection between Madeira and Hawaii.

Our passion for rum, cocktails and the histories of the islands, which have stirred us, is heartfelt.
